GENERAL INDIAN FOOD LABELING REGULATIONS 101

All prepackaged food products sold in India must adhere to the Food Safety and Standards (Packaging and Labeling) Regulations, 2011. The Food Safety and Standards Regulation, 2011 is a notice issued by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India, which is part of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

Food labeling regulations in India require all “prepackaged” or “pre-packed food” to abide by labeling regulations. According to the rules, prepackaged food is food that has been placed in a package of any kind in such a way that the contents cannot be changed without tampering and is ready for sale to the consumer.

The label must be written in English, Hindi, or Devnagri. In addition to the foregoing description, the title may include information in any other language as needed.

The label must not include any information about the food that could be interpreted as false, misleading, manipulative, or otherwise create an invalid impression of the product.

The label must be securely attached to the container so that it cannot be easily removed.

The label’s contents or information should be clear, prominent, memorable, and easily readable by the consumer.

A wrapper must contain necessary information or make the label of the product inside easily coherent by not concealing it.

The name of the food, as well as the trade name and description, must be included. If the food contains more than one ingredient, a list of the ingredients must be presented in descending order of their composition by weight or volume, as applicable, at the time of production.
